Water-Base vs. Plastisol: Which Screen Print Is Right For Your Shirts?

The ink you choose decides how your shirt feels three washes in. Here is how water-base, discharge, and plastisol actually differ on press and on a person.

Almost every customer who walks into our Conroe shop asks the same question in some form: why does one custom shirt feel soft and lived-in while another feels like it has a sticker glued to the front? The answer is almost always the ink. Water-base, discharge, and plastisol are three very different systems, and picking the right one for your garment and artwork is the single biggest quality decision in a screen print order.

How Water-Base Ink Works

Water-base ink uses water as the carrier instead of plastic. When the shirt goes through the dryer, the water evaporates and the pigment stays behind, bonded into the cotton fibers rather than sitting on top of them. The result is a print you can barely feel — run your hand across it and you mostly feel shirt.

That fiber penetration is also why water-base prints breathe. On a large front print, a plastisol slab can trap heat across your whole chest. A water-base print of the same size lets air move through the garment, which matters a lot for summer events, restaurant staff, and anything athletic.

  • Softest possible hand feel on 100% cotton
  • Breathable across large print areas
  • Ages gracefully — fades with the shirt, not off of it
  • Best on light garments unless paired with discharge

Where Discharge Printing Fits

Discharge is water-base ink with an activator that removes the garment dye and replaces it with pigment in a single pass. On a dark 100% cotton tee, that means you get a bright, opaque design with no white underbase and no heavy ink deposit. It is the technique behind most premium retail tees you have picked up and thought felt unusually good.

The trade-off is predictability. Different dyes discharge to different base tones — a navy might pull to a warm cream rather than a pure white — so we run tests on the actual garment before committing a full run. It is one more step, and it is worth it.

When Plastisol Is Still The Right Answer

Plastisol has a bad reputation it does not fully deserve. Printed badly it is thick and rubbery. Printed well — thin deposit, correct mesh, proper cure — it is durable, color-accurate, and works on blends and polyester where water-base struggles.

We reach for plastisol when a job calls for tight registration on athletic blends, precise spot-color matching for a corporate brand standard, or high-opacity effects like metallic and specialty inks. The craft is in laying it down thin and smooth so it never feels like a patch.

Choosing For Your Order

If your garment is 100% ringspun cotton and softness is the priority, water-base or discharge wins nearly every time. If you are printing on a 50/50 or tri-blend, on performance polyester, or you need an exact Pantone match across multiple reorders, thin plastisol is the safer route.

You do not have to decide alone. Send us your art and your garment preference through the instant quote tool and we will tell you which ink we would run and why, before you spend a dollar.

The Takeaway

Ink choice is not a technicality — it is the difference between a shirt that lives in the drawer and one that gets worn every week.
